Tell us what you think about litter

"Years ago, I was on a first date w/ this guy I really liked and he rolled down his window and threw a big bag of trash from his fast food meal out the window. I was SHOCKED! Instantly he wasn't so cute to me any more and I never returned his calls for a 2nd date. He didn't think I was serious when I asked him to go back and pick it up...but I was! If California had a litter hotline, I think I would be calling it a few times a week. That is a great idea." -Christi Williams

Click picture to play videoStop litter campaign targets litter bugs WBIR-TV 10 News. Reporter Emily Stroud. 10.28.2007: "They've done it so much and so long they don't even think about it twice," said anti-litter advocate Byron Chesney of Knoxville. "They just roll down the window and chuck it out like it's nothing." Chesney started his own anti-litter website several years ago to educate people: www.tennesseetrash.org

"I think a lot of them sometimes don't even realize what they're doing. And then when you call them out on it they're like, whoa, maybe I shouldn't be doing that," he said...read more here.

Illegal Dumping in Mascot, TN

Illegal dump site in Mascot, TNTennesseeTrash.org exclusive: Aug. 29, 2007: Tennessee Trash has discovered an illegal dump site on Mascot Rd. in rural East Knox County. The dump site is on a gravel pull-off on the side of the road, just west of the locally famous Mascot reptile rock. Old tires, bags of clothes, construction material, and household trash, has been dumped behind large rocks along side the road. It appears that this illegal dumping has been going on for quite a while. I will attempt to return to the dump site for a day of clean-up. I will post updates as they occur. Click here to see some pics of the illegal dump site in Mascot, TN.

What's in your water?

Trash don't disappear overnight.

It may seem like a small thing to toss your empty coke bottle over the side of the boat or out the car window, but did you know that it takes 450 years for a plastic drink bottle to disappear? Below are a few other items and their "disappear" times:

50 years: Styrofoam cup

200 years: Aluminum can

450 years: Disposable diaper

450 years: Plastic milk jug
